Depression has a way of making everything feel heavier. Getting out of bed takes effort. Things you used to enjoy feel flat. And one of the most frustrating parts is that people around you might say "just think positive" or "snap out of it," as if you haven't already tried.

The truth is, depression isn't a choice or a weakness. It's a complex condition involving brain chemistry, learned thought patterns, life experiences, and often a combination of all three. And while there's no single solution that works for everyone, hypnotherapy is increasingly being used as one piece of a broader treatment approach.

Why depression is hard to think your way out of

Depression changes how your brain processes information. It creates a negative filter that makes everything look worse than it is. You notice failures more than successes. You interpret neutral situations as threatening. You remember the bad and forget the good.

These aren't conscious choices. They're automatic patterns running below the surface, and that's precisely why willpower and positive thinking often fall short. The patterns that maintain depression are largely subconscious, which is where hypnotherapy comes in.

How hypnotherapy may help with depression

Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to address some of the patterns that keep depression locked in place. During a session, your practitioner guides you into a state of focused relaxation where the mind becomes more receptive to new perspectives and suggestions.

Common approaches include:

  • Interrupting negative thought loops. Depression thrives on repetitive negative thinking. Hypnotherapy can help create new automatic responses to replace the ones that spiral downward.
  • Reconnecting with motivation and pleasure. Through visualization and suggestion, practitioners help you access positive emotional states that depression has made hard to reach.
  • Processing underlying experiences. Sometimes depression is rooted in unresolved grief, trauma, or life transitions. Hypnotherapy can help you work through these at a deeper level.
  • Improving sleep and energy. Depression and poor sleep often go hand in hand. Hypnotherapy has a strong track record for improving sleep quality, which can have a meaningful effect on mood.

An important note about professional care

This needs to be said clearly: hypnotherapy for depression should always work alongside licensed mental health care, not replace it. If you're experiencing moderate to severe depression, a qualified therapist or psychiatrist should be part of your team. Hypnotherapy can be a valuable complement, especially when traditional approaches have helped but you feel stuck, but it's not a standalone treatment for clinical depression.

A responsible hypnotherapist will ask about your mental health history, current treatment, and any medications you're taking. They should be willing to work in coordination with your other providers.

What a session looks like

Your first session will involve a thorough conversation about your experience with depression, what you've tried, and what you're hoping to achieve. Your practitioner needs to understand your specific patterns, because depression shows up differently for everyone.

The hypnosis portion typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes. You'll be guided into a deeply relaxed state while remaining fully aware and in control. Your practitioner will use techniques tailored to your situation, which might include visualization, reframing, or regression to significant experiences.

Most practitioners recommend 6 to 10 sessions for depression, though some people notice shifts earlier. You may also receive a recording for daily listening between sessions.

Setting realistic expectations

Hypnotherapy can be a powerful addition to your depression treatment plan, but it's not a quick fix. Recovery from depression is usually gradual. You might notice small shifts first, like sleeping better, feeling slightly more motivated, or catching negative thoughts before they spiral.

The people who benefit most from hypnotherapy for depression are those who stay engaged with their broader treatment plan, attend sessions consistently, and practice any techniques they're given between appointments. It's one tool in the toolbox, and sometimes it's the tool that helps the other tools work better.

The practitioners listed below are based in or around Newland, Tennessee and have indicated depression as one of their areas of focus. Some profiles are verified directly by the practitioner, while others are broader listings from public sources.

I had an interest in hypnosis and self hypnosis as far back as high school, and I read everything I could about it in the local libraries. But I started to seriously study hypnosis sometime around 1987. I wound up in a position that required me to do a lot of interviews, and being able to build a quick rapport with people was a necessity. Thankfully, a friend taught me about conversational hypnosis, which proved invaluable. Later on I started using hypnosis for my friends and family and co-workers. Usually they asked me to help stop smoking or help with fear and anxiety. I’ve worked with hypnosis helping other people all in all for about 25 years. Eventually I found out that nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping other people solve their problems with hypnosis. For over thirty years, I have done therapy with individuals experiencing mild to severe stress. I have successfully treated clients who are experiencing anxiety , depression and panic attacks. For the past fifteen years, I have concentrated primarily on clients who have experienced emotional abuse from having been involved with a person who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. These relationships leave others feeling as thought the life has been sucked out of them. I have helped many clients go from feeling weak, helpless and depleted to strong and self confident; they regain self-esteem and peace of mind.

I am a certified Safe and Sound provider and a certified Compassion Fatigue Professional, with advanced training in Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, Somatic Movement, andHypnotherapy, all grounded in Somatosensory, Polyvagal, and Neuro-integrative mental healthcare. You may be living with chronic pain or illness, ongoing fatigue, anxiety that shows up in the body, lingering grief, or the effects of trauma, your own or what you’ve witnessed in others. You may have already talked about these experiences in therapy, and still notice that certain emotional or bodily responses stick with you. Rather than something needing to be fixed or released, this work offers space to gently attend to how stress, emotion, and meaning are experienced in the body over time. It's not about pushing you to revisit painful memories or relive past trauma, but about supporting balance and awareness in the present.

Feeling distant or stuck in your relationship? Maybe trust has been broken, or every conversation seems to turn into an argument. Even once-loving couples can start living like polite roommates—hurt, lonely, and unsure how to reconnect. I’m one of only three therapists living in Tennessee certified in the Gottman Method for couples therapy—a research-based approach that helps most couples rebuild closeness and communication. I also work with individuals damaged by depression, anxiety or trauma. In my Brentwood office or by tele-health, sessions can usually begin in one week with evening and weekend availability.

I often use my training and experience in EMDR and clinicalhypnotherapyto help heal trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, and often interpersonal relationships.Sometimes life hurts...A LOT! Please know there is healing from trauma, from broken relationships, from dependence of substances or behaviors, and from chronic pain. This comes from an individual that has experienced most of these. I am a certified EMDR therapist and an approved EMDRIA consultant. I work with severe traumas on a daily basis and understand how trauma can wreak havoc on our life. I am also a certified clinical hypnotherapist and have learned how to integrate these two models of therapy. The result is better than either individually! I use these two models to help heal trauma and chronic pain, along with others.

My ideal client is one who is curious about his/her emotional life. My treatment philosophy is to engage a person in an exploration of their problems in ways that can lead to better relationships, feelings about themselves, and overall day-to-day functioning. My patients should find relief from their symptoms - whatever they may be - while making changes that will help them stay emotionally healthy and symptom-free in the long-term. It is my belief that therapy is a growth process that can only happen by collaboration and genuine trust between patient and therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hypnotherapy cure depression?
No, and any practitioner who claims it can is not being honest with you. Hypnotherapy is a complementary tool that may help with certain aspects of depression, like negative thought loops, low motivation, and sleep disruption. It works best alongside professional mental health care, not as a replacement for it.
Should I stop seeing my therapist or psychiatrist if I start hypnotherapy?
Absolutely not. Hypnotherapy for depression should always be used in addition to your existing mental health treatment, never instead of it. A responsible hypnotherapist will ask about your current care team and may even want to coordinate with your therapist or prescriber. If someone tells you to stop medication or therapy, find a different practitioner.
What does the research say about hypnotherapy for depression?
A 2019 meta-analysis in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnotherapy combined with CBT produced significantly greater improvement in depressive symptoms than CBT alone. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis has also shown promising results, particularly for mild to moderate depression. The evidence is growing, but researchers agree more large-scale studies are needed.
How is hypnotherapy for depression different from regular talk therapy?
Talk therapy primarily works with the conscious mind, helping you understand and reframe your thoughts through conversation. Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious, where many of the automatic patterns that fuel depression live, like negative self-talk, hopelessness, and emotional withdrawal. Think of it as working on a different layer of the same problem. Many people find the combination of both approaches more effective than either one alone.
