Anxiety is one of those things that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it. It's not just worrying. It's a full-body experience, a tightness in your chest, racing thoughts, a sense that something is wrong even when everything around you is fine. And the frustrating part is that knowing it's irrational doesn't make it stop.

That's because anxiety lives in a part of your brain that doesn't respond well to logic. The amygdala, your brain's threat-detection system, can get stuck in a pattern of overreacting. It fires alarm signals when there's no real danger, and once that loop is established, willpower alone usually isn't enough to break it.

How hypnotherapy approaches anxiety

Hypnotherapy works differently from talk therapy in one important way: it accesses the subconscious mind directly. During a session, your hypnotherapist guides you into a state of deep relaxation and focused attention. In that state, your mind is more open to new patterns and suggestions.

This matters for anxiety because the anxious response is largely automatic. You don't choose to feel panicked before a meeting or lie awake at 2 a.m. running worst-case scenarios. Those responses are programmed in. Hypnotherapy helps reprogram them.

A typical anxiety session might include:

  • Identifying triggers and patterns. Your hypnotherapist will want to understand what sets off your anxiety and how it shows up for you specifically.
  • Guided relaxation. You'll be guided into a calm, focused state. You're not asleep and you're not out of control. Most people describe it as similar to that feeling right before you fall asleep.
  • Subconscious work. This is where the change happens. Your practitioner may use visualization, reframing, or direct suggestions to help your mind respond differently to the situations that currently trigger anxiety.
  • Self-regulation tools. Many hypnotherapists teach you techniques you can use on your own between sessions, like self-hypnosis or anchoring.

What the research shows

Hypnotherapy for anxiety has a growing evidence base. A 2019 meta-analysis in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews found that hypnotherapy produced significant reductions in anxiety across multiple controlled studies. Research from APA Division 30 (the Society of Psychological Hypnosis) supports hypnosis as a tool for anxiety management.

Brain imaging studies are especially interesting. They show that during hypnosis, activity in the default mode network (the brain region associated with rumination and self-referential thinking) actually decreases. In other words, the part of your brain that feeds the anxious loop gets quieter.

That said, hypnotherapy isn't a magic fix. It works best when combined with other healthy practices, and it requires active participation. You won't be zapped out of anxiety in a single session. Most practitioners recommend 4 to 8 sessions depending on the severity and history.

What to expect in your first session

Your first session will likely start with a conversation. Your hypnotherapist will ask about your anxiety history, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping to achieve. This isn't just intake paperwork. It helps them tailor the hypnotherapy to your specific experience.

The hypnosis portion usually lasts 20 to 40 minutes. Afterward, most people feel noticeably calmer, though the deeper shifts tend to build over multiple sessions.

When to consider hypnotherapy for anxiety

Hypnotherapy is worth considering if you've been dealing with anxiety for a while, if talk therapy has helped but you feel stuck, or if you're looking for something that works on a deeper level than surface-level coping strategies. It pairs well with cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, and other approaches.

It's not the right fit for everyone, and it's not a substitute for psychiatric care in severe cases. But for many people, it offers something that other approaches don't: a way to change the automatic responses that keep anxiety running.

I began my journey in mentoring while serving as a sergeant in the Marine Corps. Through my experiences, I made mistakes and learned important lessons about managing stress and making decisions. I now apply these concepts in my sessions, utilizing the power of hypnosis.Serving in the military and within the community presents unique challenges, from deployments to constant changes. There are moments when early morning calls demand your utmost focus and dedication to your team. These experiences can be hard for those outside the field to fully comprehend, as they often require setting aside personal needs for the sake of the team and those we serve. As a military veteran, I understand that our culture emphasizes the importance of the team above all else. In my hypnotherapy sessions, I strive to help you reintroduce yourself into the equation. It’s challenging to serve others and to be the best version of yourself if you don’t feel safe, stable, and secure; it’s time.

My own experience with hypnotherapy was nothing short of life changing. As I traversed my own challenges and aspirations, I discovered that delving into the depths of my subconscious mind during hypnotherapy allowed me to uncover hidden potentials, release emotional strongholds, and embrace a newfound sense of clarity and inner peace. I have personally experienced and witnessed the incredible ability of the mind to diminish pain, reduce anxiety and enjoy life more fully. With a professional background and education in positive psychology and alternative healthcare, it became abundantly clear that the mind and body connection are inseparable. As a Certified Hypnotherapist and graduate of HMI College of Hypnotherapy, I bring to each session a profound understanding of the human mind and the transformative potential of hypnotherapy. During each session I listen, learn, provide tools for everyday use, and gently guide clients through a unique process that considers their learning style and their desired outcomes.I am committed to facilitating an environment that allows my clients to connect with their most positive and authentic selves. The foundation of my approach in each session is rooted in empathy, compassion, and non-judgment. I am dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing space where clients can explore their subconscious, confront limiting beliefs, and cultivate powerful mental shifts that align with their goals.I am inspired by the stories of personal growth and transformation I witness in my clients. It is my firm belief that everyone possesses the inner resources to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams and that we can unlock that potential through the subconscious mind.I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to work with those who are eager to harness the potential of hypnotherapy to achieve their aspirations. Just as I have benefited from this transformative journey, I am eager to help others experience the same profound shifts and positive outcomes that they desire.I welcome you to a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and hope. Together, we can unlock your true potential and move on a path toward positive change.

I weave in somatic practices to help you notice where stress and old memories live in the body, and I use Internal Family Systems (IFS) andhypnotherapyto reach the deeper parts of the mind.As a Veteran with 20 years of military service and an Idaho native, I value the courage it takes to face what’s difficult. I specialize in working with individuals navigating trauma, grief, and the lasting impact of difficult life experiences, including those unique to veterans and the challenges of reintegration. My practice also supports clients facing major life transitions, questions of identity and purpose, and the complexities of men’s issues in a changing world. Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnotherapy help with anxiety?
Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious patterns that keep anxiety running in the background. Rather than just teaching coping skills (which are still valuable), it helps retrain the nervous system's automatic responses. Many clients describe it as getting to the root of the anxiety rather than managing the symptoms.
How many sessions does anxiety hypnotherapy take?
Most hypnotherapists suggest 4 to 8 sessions for anxiety, though some people notice shifts after just 2 or 3. It depends on how long the anxiety has been present and whether there are specific triggers or a more generalized pattern. Your practitioner should be able to give you a realistic timeline after an initial consultation.
Can hypnotherapy replace medication for anxiety?
Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medication, and any practitioner who tells you to stop taking prescribed medication is a red flag. Many people use hypnotherapy alongside their existing treatment plan, and some find they can work with their doctor to adjust medication over time. That decision always belongs to you and your prescriber.
Is hypnotherapy for anxiety backed by research?
Yes. A 2019 meta-analysis published in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews found hypnotherapy produced significant anxiety reduction across multiple studies. Research from APA Division 30 supports its use for anxiety, and brain imaging studies show measurable changes in the areas that regulate fear and worry during hypnosis.
