A stack of balanced stones resting on a calm rocky shore

Grief isn't something that follows a neat timeline or a predictable set of stages. It's messy, it comes in waves, and it touches every part of your life. One moment you feel almost normal, and the next you're blindsided by a song on the radio or an empty chair at the dinner table.

People around you might say things like "it's been a year, you should be feeling better by now" or "they're in a better place." They mean well, but grief doesn't work on anyone else's schedule. And the pressure to "get over it" can make you feel like something is wrong with you for still hurting, which only adds to the pain.

Why grief can get stuck

For most people, grief naturally softens over time. The acute pain gradually gives way to a different kind of sadness, one that's tinged with acceptance and even gratitude for the time you had. But sometimes that natural process gets interrupted.

Grief can get stuck for many reasons: guilt about things left unsaid, trauma surrounding the loss, complicated relationships with the person who died, multiple losses close together, or simply not having the space to grieve fully. When grief gets stuck, it doesn't just stay the same. It often starts creating secondary problems like depression, anxiety, physical health issues, and difficulty engaging with life.

How hypnotherapy helps with grief

Hypnotherapy isn't about fast-forwarding through grief or bypassing the pain. It's about helping the natural healing process move forward when it's gotten blocked.

During sessions, your practitioner works with the subconscious mind to:

  • Process stuck emotions. Sometimes grief gets trapped because the feelings are too overwhelming to process consciously. In the safe, guided hypnotic state, you can access and release these emotions at a pace that feels manageable.
  • Resolve unfinished business. Many grieving people carry guilt, regret, or things they wish they'd said. Hypnotherapy can create a space for emotional resolution, not by rewriting history, but by allowing you to work through those feelings at a deeper level.
  • Reconnect with positive memories. Grief can overshadow everything, making it hard to access happy memories without them being instantly followed by pain. Hypnotherapy helps restore your ability to remember and cherish the good times.
  • Rebuild a sense of meaning. Loss can shatter your sense of purpose or safety. Hypnotherapy can help you begin constructing a new understanding of your life that honors the loss while making room for the future.

What a grief session looks like

Your first session will be largely conversational. Your practitioner will want to understand the nature of your loss, how you've been coping, what your grief looks like day-to-day, and what feels most stuck. This conversation isn't just assessment. It's the beginning of the therapeutic process.

The hypnosis portion is gentle and guided entirely at your pace. You won't be pushed into anything you're not ready for. Your practitioner might use visualization, guided imagery, or regression to help you access and process emotions that have been difficult to reach. Some sessions focus on specific memories or moments, while others work more broadly on your emotional state.

Grief work typically involves 4 to 8 sessions, though there's no fixed number. Some people find resolution faster, while others benefit from ongoing support over a longer period.

What hypnotherapy won't do

Hypnotherapy won't take away your grief, and it shouldn't. Grief is the natural response to losing someone or something important. What hypnotherapy can do is help you move through it rather than staying stuck in it.

It also won't replace grief counseling or therapy for people dealing with complicated bereavement, major depression, or trauma associated with the loss. It works best as a complement to other support, whether that's therapy, support groups, spiritual care, or the support of friends and family.

When to consider it

If your grief feels stuck, if it's been months or years and the intensity hasn't shifted, or if you're finding that grief is preventing you from engaging with the life you still have, hypnotherapy is worth considering. It offers something unique: a way to access and process the deep, subconscious layers of grief that talking alone sometimes can't reach.

The practitioners listed below are based in or around Flushing, Massachusetts and have indicated grief as one of their areas of focus. Some profiles are verified directly by the practitioner, while others are broader listings from public sources.

At the age of 5 years old, Vanessa underwent her first eye surgery to repair a torn retina. Consequently, losing her vision in her right eye and being declared Visually Impaired. She began the journey of restrictions as society began to create the narrative of her limitations in all areas of her life. The world’s portrait of her maximum capabilities never made much sense to her. She was fueled with a passion and an insatiable lust for life and love and nature and adventure.Vanessa’s vision impairment didn’t feel like a deterrent rather creating a growing wonder, curiosity, and determination to silence the voices surrounding her. Fighting the masses of naysayers, she rejected the options presented before her. Being guided to learn Braille and being led to accept her "only successful path" as a Court Reporter, a suggestion that never felt fulfilling or of truth and of purpose. Creating a discord between the majority and self. A discord that could not be tempered. She rejected this limiting belief and remained loyal to her heart’s desires to do, to be, and to create more. A continuous series of eye surgeries left her completely blind at the age of 16 years old. At this time she began her journey of trusting herself and her abilities to navigate the world around her, utilizing her other senses. After a 6 month period, regaining limited sight, she remained steadfast in her quest to live life with greater appreciation for her limited vision.Whilst always feeling she saw and understood the world better than most. With heightened awareness and full focus on attention and intention to the service of others, accessibility, and pushing past any and all limitations. She enjoyed going to the deepest depths of self and learning empowerment by loss and gain. She knew with absolute certainty, they are not mutually exclusive but mutually necessary.Embracing her intensified awareness of self and gratitude in seeing the world differently than others. Determined to learn as much as she could about humans and their perception and greater potential. Embarking on a solo quest for living fully without boundaries. Vanessa declares she has 20/20 vision, albeit, quite differently than others may expect. She embraces the greatest gifts of sight, as she creates a practice dedicated to being a Navigator to all those who are unable to see their maximum potential. Pushing past uncomfort and discomfort in a safe and loving manner.HypnoNavigator is devoted to bringing all things from darkness into the light. A multi faceted practice which promotes cultivating a safe space for all those seeking and in need. Her focus goes far beyond her early instinctive recognition and awareness. Utilizing various techniques and modalities of communication to support, encourage, enlighten, and integrate profound insights and highlights through Hypnotherapy and other self sustaining methodologies.Vanessa’s mission is to deliver programs that can be incorporated into everyone’s day to day life. Without tools or devices – healing can be simplified and equally profound. Moving from Darkness into the Light is the core of our existence. We find power when our challenges become our greatest gifts. Words matter. Empathy guaranteed.Vanessa advocates and is a navigator for the practice of Hypnotherapy in the industry, educates, formulates best practices, and is militant in serving with honesty and integrity to best serve all. Fearlessly combating the illusions of weekend course "Hypnotherapist." An advocate for the practice of Hypnotherapy which requires extensive knowledge, experience, research, dedication, and probity. A Navigator for a clear path forward to experienced healing resources and adhering to the highest authorities of best practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after a loss should I consider hypnotherapy for grief?
There's no universal timeline. Some people seek hypnotherapy weeks after a loss, while others come years later when they realize the grief hasn't softened. In the very early stages, basic support and counseling are usually more appropriate. Most hypnotherapists suggest waiting until the initial acute shock has passed, often a few months, though there's no hard rule. If grief is significantly disrupting your daily life at any point, it's worth exploring.
Will hypnotherapy make me forget the person I lost?
Absolutely not. Hypnotherapy for grief is never about forgetting or moving on as if the loss didn't happen. It's about helping you process the pain so that your memories of the person become a source of comfort rather than overwhelming anguish. Many clients say that after hypnotherapy, they feel closer to their loved one because the grief fog lifts and the good memories become more accessible.
Can hypnotherapy help with grief that isn't about death?
Yes. Grief isn't limited to bereavement. People grieve divorces, estrangements, job losses, health changes, miscarriages, the loss of a way of life, and many other things. These losses are real, and the grief they cause is real. Hypnotherapy can help with any form of grief where you're struggling to process the loss and move forward.
I feel stuck in my grief years later. Is that normal, and can hypnotherapy help?
Getting stuck in grief, sometimes called complicated or prolonged grief, is more common than people realize. It affects an estimated 7 to 10% of bereaved people, according to research in World Psychiatry. Hypnotherapy can be particularly helpful for stuck grief because it accesses the subconscious, where unresolved emotions and unfinished processing often live. It can help complete the grief work that got interrupted or stuck.
