Trauma changes how your brain processes the world. After a traumatic experience, your nervous system can get stuck in a state of high alert, constantly scanning for threats that aren't there. Sounds, smells, or situations that remind you of the event can trigger intense reactions that feel completely out of your control.

This happens because traumatic memories are stored differently from normal ones. Instead of being processed and filed away, they remain raw and unresolved, as if the event is still happening. That's why talking about trauma logically doesn't always help. The part of your brain that holds the memory doesn't speak the language of logic.

How hypnotherapy works with trauma

Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious mind, which is where traumatic memories live. During a session, your practitioner guides you into a deeply relaxed state where you can approach difficult memories without the same overwhelming emotional response.

This isn't about reliving the trauma. A skilled trauma hypnotherapist creates a safe distance between you and the memory, allowing you to process it without being retraumatized. Common approaches include:

  • Reprocessing the memory. Helping your brain file the traumatic memory properly so it becomes a past event rather than a present threat. This can reduce flashbacks and intrusive thoughts.
  • Reducing the emotional charge. Traumatic memories carry intense emotions like fear, helplessness, and shame. Hypnotherapy can help lower the intensity of those emotions so the memory loses its power over you.
  • Building safety and grounding. Before any trauma work begins, your practitioner will help you develop internal resources, safe places, calming techniques, and self-regulation tools you can use during and between sessions.
  • Addressing the body's response. Trauma lives in the body as much as the mind. Hypnotherapy can help release physical tension patterns, hypervigilance, and the chronic stress response that comes with PTSD.

Important considerations

Trauma hypnotherapy requires specialized training. Not every hypnotherapist is qualified to do this work, and working with an untrained practitioner can do more harm than good. Look for someone who has:

  • Additional training in trauma-informed hypnotherapy
  • Experience working specifically with trauma or PTSD
  • Ideally, a background in mental health (licensed therapist, counselor, or psychologist who also practices hypnotherapy)

Hypnotherapy for trauma works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It pairs well with EMDR, cognitive processing therapy, somatic experiencing, and other established trauma treatments. It should not be your only form of treatment for significant trauma or diagnosed PTSD.

What the research shows

Research on hypnotherapy for PTSD is still developing, but early results are promising. A study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnotherapy combined with CBT produced greater improvement in PTSD symptoms than CBT alone. The American Psychological Association recognizes hypnosis as a tool that can be integrated into trauma treatment.

Hypnotherapy may be particularly useful for people who find traditional talk therapy difficult because the trauma feels too overwhelming to discuss directly. The relaxed, indirect approach can provide an entry point when other methods feel too intense.

What to expect

Your first session will focus on building rapport and safety. A responsible trauma hypnotherapist will not dive into traumatic material in the first session. Instead, they'll learn your history, understand your triggers, and teach you grounding techniques.

The actual trauma processing work usually begins in the second or third session, and only at a pace you're comfortable with. You are always in control during hypnosis, and a good practitioner will check in with you regularly throughout the process.

I specialize in EMDR, Dialectic Behavior Therapy, Attachment therapy for children and parents, Mindfulness-Based therapy andHypnotherapy. My primary interest is treating different aspects of trauma and Post Traumatic Stress disorder in adults and children. Trauma takes us out of our window of tolerance where we function optimally and either leads to a fight or flight response or dissociative numbness. It can also lead to a repetition compulsion when we repeat various aspects of the original trauma or redirected aggression treating others like those who caused us harm. I have a great understanding of trauma especially related to attachment disorders in children such as Reactive Attachment Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder as well as PTSD in adults

A hypnotherapy session is a partnership between the client and the hypnotherapist. I believe that the answers clients seek reside within themselves, and it is from this understanding that I work collaboratively with each individual. The subconscious mind inherently knows what it needs to heal, release, and progress. My role is to guide clients gently through this process, helping them bypass their critical inner voice and access the deeper parts of their mind where healing begins. Since every client is unique, I customize each session to meet their specific needs. Please note that any work beyond Avocational/Vocational scope requires a medical referral.I value authenticity, empathy, and humor as essential qualities both in life and in my role as a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Often, we are too hard on ourselves, forgetting to step back and recognize our humanity, with all its imperfections. I offer a non-judgmental space where you can take a break from self-criticism and move toward becoming your best self.I am proud to provide faith-based sessions for clients who find strength in spirituality. Growing up immersed in diverse religious teachings—my mother owned an international religious store where I spent many summers—I learned early on to distinguish between worldly challenges and deeper metaphysical concerns. As an adult, I volunteer at Morristown Memorial Hospital, supporting cancer patients through energy healing and hypnotherapy. Additionally, I dedicate a portion of my practice each month to assisting individuals who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or who are in vulnerable circumstances.I have also been honored to offer hypnotherapy and energy healing to members of the LGBTQ community, as well as to support terminally ill clients as they navigate the final stages of their journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnotherapy help with trauma and PTSD?
Hypnotherapy can help process traumatic memories in a safe, controlled way. It works with the subconscious mind to reduce the emotional charge attached to traumatic experiences, so they no longer trigger the same intense reactions. It's typically used alongside other trauma therapies, not as a standalone treatment.
Is hypnotherapy safe for trauma survivors?
When done by a qualified practitioner experienced in trauma work, yes. However, trauma hypnotherapy requires specialized training beyond basic hypnotherapy certification. Look for someone with additional credentials in trauma-informed care or clinical hypnotherapy. Avoid practitioners who promise to 'erase' traumatic memories.
How many sessions does trauma hypnotherapy take?
Trauma work is typically longer than other hypnotherapy applications, often 8 to 15 sessions depending on the nature and duration of the trauma. Complex or developmental trauma generally requires more sessions than a single traumatic event. Your practitioner should set realistic expectations early on.
Can hypnotherapy replace EMDR or trauma-focused CBT?
Hypnotherapy is best used as a complement to established trauma therapies like EMDR, CPT, or trauma-focused CBT, not as a replacement. Some practitioners are trained in multiple modalities and can integrate hypnotherapy into a broader treatment approach. Always work with a licensed mental health professional for trauma.
