A runner in motion on a track at golden hour, focused and strong

Every athlete knows the experience. In practice, you're dialed in. Your body moves the way it should, your timing is perfect, everything flows. But when the pressure's on, when it actually counts, something shifts. You overthink your swing, tighten up at the free throw line, or second-guess decisions you'd normally make on instinct.

The difference between practice and peak performance usually isn't physical. It's mental. And that's exactly the gap that sports hypnotherapy is designed to close.

The mental side of athletic performance

Research consistently shows that elite performance is 90% mental once you've reached a certain level of physical skill. The difference between athletes who perform well under pressure and those who choke is rarely about talent or training hours. It's about what's happening between their ears.

Peak athletic performance requires a state that psychologists call "flow," a condition where conscious thinking gets out of the way and allows trained skills to execute automatically. When you're in flow, you're not thinking about your technique. You're just doing it. Your body knows what to do.

Anxiety, self-doubt, and overthinking are the enemies of flow. They pull you out of the automatic state and into conscious analysis, which is slower, less accurate, and more prone to error.

How hypnotherapy enhances sports performance

Sports hypnotherapy works by programming the subconscious mind for optimal performance. It helps you access the flow state more consistently and maintain it under pressure.

Core techniques include:

  • Visualization and mental rehearsal. Under hypnosis, you practice performing at your best in vivid detail. Research published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology confirms that mental rehearsal activates the same motor patterns as physical practice, effectively giving you extra training time.
  • Building unshakeable focus. Distractions, crowd noise, high-pressure moments, your hypnotherapist helps you develop the ability to lock into focus regardless of external circumstances.
  • Eliminating mental blocks. Whether it's the yips, a fear of re-injury, or a slump that won't break, hypnotherapy can identify and clear the subconscious patterns that are holding you back.
  • Pre-competition programming. Many athletes use a pre-game mental routine developed in hypnotherapy sessions, a quick self-hypnosis practice that puts them in their optimal performance state before competition.
  • Recovery and pain management. Hypnotherapy can support faster recovery from training and competition by reducing stress hormones and promoting the relaxation response that aids healing.

What a sports hypnotherapy session looks like

Your practitioner will start by learning about your sport, your goals, your current mental challenges, and your performance history. The more they understand your specific situation, the better they can tailor the work.

During the hypnosis portion, you'll enter a focused, relaxed state. From there, your practitioner might guide you through a detailed visualization of your ideal performance, work on specific mental blocks, or help you develop a pre-competition routine. The experience is deeply focused, not unlike the concentration state you enter during your best performances.

Many sports hypnotherapists provide customized recordings for daily use. Consistent practice between sessions is where much of the benefit builds up, similar to how physical training requires regular repetition.

What the research shows

A meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnosis-based interventions consistently improved athletic performance across multiple sports. Studies on basketball free throw shooting, golf putting, and cricket batting have all shown measurable improvements after hypnotherapy.

Research from the Australian Institute of Sport demonstrated that athletes who used hypnosis alongside physical training outperformed those who relied on physical training alone. The effect was most pronounced in precision sports and situations requiring performance under pressure.

Setting realistic expectations

Sports hypnotherapy won't give you physical abilities you haven't trained for. If you can't hit a 300-yard drive, hypnosis isn't going to change that. What it does is help you consistently access your full potential, the performance level you know you're capable of but can't always reach.

Most athletes see measurable improvement within 4 to 6 sessions, with ongoing maintenance sessions as needed. The athletes who get the most out of it are the ones who commit to the mental practice between sessions with the same discipline they bring to physical training.

The practitioners listed below are based in or around River, Georgia and have indicated sports performance as one of their areas of focus. Some profiles are verified directly by the practitioner, while others are broader listings from public sources.

Everyone has something in their life or about themselves that they want to change or something comes up and change is forced upon a person. Sometimes it is difficult and sometimes it is frightening, but the good news is that no matter what, from controlling anxiety to having medical procedures performed, you don’t have to go through it alone.Melvin Marsh is a practicing Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist in Augusta, Georgia with particular specializations in medical hypnosis, phobias, and anxiety. While attending medical school, hypnotherapy was suggested to him to deal with his own anxiety problem caused by a residual medical phobia. As hypnotherapy started to relieve the symptoms, he realized he could use hypnosis to help his future patients.Eventually, he realized he liked hypnotherapy more than biochemistry and left medical school to pursue studies at HMI College of Hypnotherapy where he graduated with honors and won the Director’s Award. He became a certified hypnotherapist under the strict guidelines of the Hypnotherapist’s Union, the strictest certifying agency in the country requiring an additional 80 clinical hours over that of the National Guild. As someone who has worked since 2009 in health care and as one of the only certified hypnotherapists in the United States to have his own medical license, Melvin is often called upon to work with and perform both emergency hypnosis and medical hypnosis in order to benefit the client. Having his own license helps assure that the client or patient is always in capable hands not only psychologically but physically as well. The rest of Melvin’s educational background includes a B.S. in Anthropology and Human Biology from Emory University, a M.S. in Space Studies (focus on aerospace psychology) from the University of North Dakota, a M.S. in Psychology from Georgia Southern University, and has completed many hours of study on Webyeshiva and is a licensed and experienced EMT.Melvin has been interviewed by top podcasts, including being interviewed by the famous Adam Eason of Hypnosis Weekly and is much in demand as a speaker and teacher. He is available for consultation through his website (he does not offer free consultations) and is private pay only. Please have your medical referral, if relevant, ready. When Melvin is not seeing clients, he can be found playing with his dogs, watching bad vampire films, and cooking gourmet food. He also is an activist for transgender rights (he is FTM) and volunteers at his synagogue. He also enjoys harassing and embarrassing his partner and daughter. He can also sometimes be seen attempting to complete crazy things on his Bucket List and fighting off the cries of “Eat Me” from the mountain of chocolate in his pantry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do professional athletes actually use hypnotherapy?
Yes. Many elite athletes and sports teams incorporate hypnotherapy or sports hypnosis into their training. Tiger Woods famously used hypnosis from age 13, and numerous Olympic athletes have credited mental training including hypnosis for their success. It's increasingly mainstream in professional sports, often delivered by sports psychologists who include hypnotic techniques in their practice.
How does sports hypnotherapy differ from regular sports psychology?
Sports psychology typically works with the conscious mind through techniques like goal-setting, self-talk, and cognitive strategies. Sports hypnotherapy goes a layer deeper, working with the subconscious to change automatic responses, build unshakeable focus, and remove mental blocks that conscious effort alone can't reach. Many sports psychologists actually incorporate hypnotic techniques because the two approaches complement each other so well.
Can hypnotherapy help me get past a performance slump?
Performance slumps are one of the most common reasons athletes seek hypnotherapy. Slumps are usually mental, not physical. They happen when self-doubt, overthinking, or fear of failure disrupts the automatic flow state that peak performance requires. Hypnotherapy helps clear those mental blocks and reconnect you with the confident, instinctive state where you perform your best.
How close to a competition should I have a hypnotherapy session?
Most practitioners recommend starting 4 to 6 weeks before a major competition so you have time to build and reinforce new mental patterns. Some athletes also have a brief session or use a recording the day before competition. Avoid starting hypnotherapy for the first time the week of a major event, as you'll get better results with some practice time built in.
