A stack of balanced stones resting on a calm rocky shore

Trauma changes how your brain processes the world. After a traumatic experience, your nervous system can get stuck in a state of high alert, constantly scanning for threats that aren't there. Sounds, smells, or situations that remind you of the event can trigger intense reactions that feel completely out of your control.

This happens because traumatic memories are stored differently from normal ones. Instead of being processed and filed away, they remain raw and unresolved, as if the event is still happening. That's why talking about trauma logically doesn't always help. The part of your brain that holds the memory doesn't speak the language of logic.

How hypnotherapy works with trauma

Hypnotherapy accesses the subconscious mind, which is where traumatic memories live. During a session, your practitioner guides you into a deeply relaxed state where you can approach difficult memories without the same overwhelming emotional response.

This isn't about reliving the trauma. A skilled trauma hypnotherapist creates a safe distance between you and the memory, allowing you to process it without being retraumatized. Common approaches include:

  • Reprocessing the memory. Helping your brain file the traumatic memory properly so it becomes a past event rather than a present threat. This can reduce flashbacks and intrusive thoughts.
  • Reducing the emotional charge. Traumatic memories carry intense emotions like fear, helplessness, and shame. Hypnotherapy can help lower the intensity of those emotions so the memory loses its power over you.
  • Building safety and grounding. Before any trauma work begins, your practitioner will help you develop internal resources, safe places, calming techniques, and self-regulation tools you can use during and between sessions.
  • Addressing the body's response. Trauma lives in the body as much as the mind. Hypnotherapy can help release physical tension patterns, hypervigilance, and the chronic stress response that comes with PTSD.

Important considerations

Trauma hypnotherapy requires specialized training. Not every hypnotherapist is qualified to do this work, and working with an untrained practitioner can do more harm than good. Look for someone who has:

  • Additional training in trauma-informed hypnotherapy
  • Experience working specifically with trauma or PTSD
  • Ideally, a background in mental health (licensed therapist, counselor, or psychologist who also practices hypnotherapy)

Hypnotherapy for trauma works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It pairs well with EMDR, cognitive processing therapy, somatic experiencing, and other established trauma treatments. It should not be your only form of treatment for significant trauma or diagnosed PTSD.

What the research shows

Research on hypnotherapy for PTSD is still developing, but early results are promising. A study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnotherapy combined with CBT produced greater improvement in PTSD symptoms than CBT alone. The American Psychological Association recognizes hypnosis as a tool that can be integrated into trauma treatment.

Hypnotherapy may be particularly useful for people who find traditional talk therapy difficult because the trauma feels too overwhelming to discuss directly. The relaxed, indirect approach can provide an entry point when other methods feel too intense.

What to expect

Your first session will focus on building rapport and safety. A responsible trauma hypnotherapist will not dive into traumatic material in the first session. Instead, they'll learn your history, understand your triggers, and teach you grounding techniques.

The actual trauma processing work usually begins in the second or third session, and only at a pace you're comfortable with. You are always in control during hypnosis, and a good practitioner will check in with you regularly throughout the process.

The most important growth a tree does is the kind nobody sees. The roots facing resistance in the dark. The slow, invisible work that makes everything above ground possible. I’ve spent years learning how to tend to that underground work – in myself, and in the people I’m honored to sit with. I help individuals and teens quiet the mental noise, build confidence, and reconnect with their inner clarity.

I work with organizations on team culture, stress management, and bonding. I am an educator at heart and love speaking about the nervous system, how our minds work, and share practical skills to be used the same day. Athletes thrive from our work together and are able to achieve their goals effortlessly. I have a BA in Philosophy, with Minors in Political Science and Women’s Studies from Sonoma State University; a Secondary Social Studies Teaching Certificate from Western Colorado University; and a Masters in American Studies from Pepperdine University. I began my professional career as a High School Social Studies teacher and educational software business owner. When my two children were born I was lucky to be able to focus on them full time. I am a certified Hypnotherapist and Master Hypnotist, Mental Welfare Coach, and Master EFT Practitioner in Manhattan Beach, California. I have certifications from 4 schools: Hypnosis Motivation Institute, The Priority Institute, Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy, and Hypnotic MasterMinds. My passion drives me to continually upgrade my knowledge in this field. I love helping people heal and deepen their self love.

Because I have personally had to deal with various issues, such as: weight loss, nail biting, self-confidence, stress, fears, perfectionism and, the effects of someone else’s alcoholism and addictions, I know, first hand, how hard it is to make positive changes, on my own.Since I first discovered the benefits of hypnotherapy in the late 1970s, I have been fascinated by the results. I lost 25 pounds in a month and stopped biting my nails on the first session! And, since I have been a hypnotherapist myself, I have seen miraculous changes in my clients, as well. Please contact me, so I can start helping you to achieve your personal and professional self-improvement goals with the power of the subconscious mind.

I have worked in the behavioral sciences as a clinician and educator since 2007, working in private practice and in community counseling as a Certified Hypnotherapist and Depth Psychotherapist (MFT). I have taught at HMI College of Hypnotherapy as a senior-staff instructor and developed the first ever Ericksonian Hypnosis Certification Course for the American Hypnosis Association.Currently, I am providing hypnotherapy and NLP coaching sessions for adult individuals in private practice on Zoom and in-office in West Hollywood, California. I also provide consultations for hypnotherapy students and educational content on parapsychology, archetypal psychology, and hypnosis. As a Depth Psychologist, my practice of hypnotherapy uniquely considers the unconscious to be what psychiatrist C.G. Jung called the “primary matrix” – the vital source of consciousness itself and a reservoir of personal and transpersonal resources. Hypnotherapy is a powerful method to tap this potential for creative problem-solving.Losing connection to the unconscious psyche, the Greek word for “Soul,” is the cause of many afflictions in the contemporary world. This connection may be blocked by limiting beliefs, habits, and emotions. Hypnotherapy is a reliable and gentle method for removing these subconscious blocks and activating the natural healing and transformative processes of the unconscious. My method of using hypnotherapy from the perspectives of depth and transpersonal psychology, while utilizing NLP and neural-entrainment technologies, is a synergistic tool for promoting mind-body wellness, behavioral change, and personal development. I look forward to assisting you.

Follow ThriveInLifeHypnosis on Instagram or Facebook to learn more about how you can use hypnosis to thrive in life.Like many of us, Rebecca’s childhood came with its share of challenges, and some of them, including her parent’s divorce and the arrival of an abusive stepmother into her life, were traumatizing. At an early age, she developed anxiety, depression, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. But when she was thirteen, her therapist did something that changed her life: The therapist told her that she had a choice; she did not have to return to her father’s house if she didn’t want to. Rebecca didn’t know she had a choice until that moment. It was in being given that choice that Rebecca knew she wanted to help people understand that they too have choices that they may not be seeing yet. Rebecca wanted to give the same gift she had received to others, so she decided to pursue a career in psychotherapy. Rebecca had always been curious about how people became the way they were and how it was best to help them. In the middle of completing her bachelor’s degree, she would need to become a psychotherapist, she stumbled upon the strange and mysterious possibility of becoming a hypnotherapist. When she explored hypnotherapy, and became a client, the experience was a powerful one, and she was able to overcome many of her biggest challenges. Learning how much power the subconscious mind had over our everyday lives led her to change the direction of her education and her career. With her new found freedom and the lessons learned on her own path to healing, Rebecca began building her philosophy of treatment as a hypnotherapist.Rebecca graduated in 2018 with Honors from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. She is a Certified Therapeutic Imagery Master, a favorite of her therapeutic tools. After two years of independent study she added her certification as a Rapid Transformational Therapy Practitioner (RTT) in 2020, which is now central to her practice.Rebecca specializes in helping clients with empowerment, confidence, self-worth, success, meditation, relationship communication skills and overcoming depression and anxiety. She also helps clients with health and wellness, procrastination, motivation, developing new habits and attracting abundance.Rebecca employs Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping), Law of Attraction processes, Past Life Regression, and more. Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnotherapy help with trauma and PTSD?
Hypnotherapy can help process traumatic memories in a safe, controlled way. It works with the subconscious mind to reduce the emotional charge attached to traumatic experiences, so they no longer trigger the same intense reactions. It's typically used alongside other trauma therapies, not as a standalone treatment.
Is hypnotherapy safe for trauma survivors?
When done by a qualified practitioner experienced in trauma work, yes. However, trauma hypnotherapy requires specialized training beyond basic hypnotherapy certification. Look for someone with additional credentials in trauma-informed care or clinical hypnotherapy. Avoid practitioners who promise to 'erase' traumatic memories.
How many sessions does trauma hypnotherapy take?
Trauma work is typically longer than other hypnotherapy applications, often 8 to 15 sessions depending on the nature and duration of the trauma. Complex or developmental trauma generally requires more sessions than a single traumatic event. Your practitioner should set realistic expectations early on.
Can hypnotherapy replace EMDR or trauma-focused CBT?
Hypnotherapy is best used as a complement to established trauma therapies like EMDR, CPT, or trauma-focused CBT, not as a replacement. Some practitioners are trained in multiple modalities and can integrate hypnotherapy into a broader treatment approach. Always work with a licensed mental health professional for trauma.
