A peaceful bedroom with soft linens and morning light through sheer curtains

If you've ever lain awake at 3 a.m. with your mind running through tomorrow's problems (or last year's regrets), you know that insomnia isn't really about sleep. It's about a brain that won't turn off.

The cruel irony of sleep problems is that the harder you try to sleep, the more awake you become. Your bed starts to feel like a place of frustration instead of rest. Your brain learns to associate nighttime with anxiety, and before long, you're caught in a loop that feeds itself.

Why insomnia sticks around

Most insomnia starts with a reason: stress, a life change, illness, a new baby. But even after the original cause is gone, the insomnia often stays. That's because your brain has learned a new pattern. Sleep researchers call this "conditioned arousal." Your nervous system starts firing up the moment you get into bed, because that's what it's been practicing.

This is why common sleep advice, like avoiding screens or drinking chamomile tea, often falls short. Those things help with sleep hygiene, but they don't address the conditioned response that's driving the insomnia.

How hypnotherapy approaches sleep

Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious patterns that keep you awake. During a session, your practitioner guides you into a deeply relaxed state and then works on retraining your brain's response to bedtime.

Common approaches include:

  • Breaking the arousal loop. Your hypnotherapist will work on disconnecting the association between bed and wakefulness, helping your brain relearn that bed means rest.
  • Quieting the mind. For people whose insomnia is driven by racing thoughts, hypnotherapy can help create a mental "off switch," a way to shift from active thinking to a restful state.
  • Addressing underlying anxiety or stress. Insomnia is often a symptom of something else. If anxiety, work stress, or unresolved emotions are fueling your sleep problems, the sessions will address those root causes.
  • Building a new sleep pattern. Many practitioners teach self-hypnosis techniques you can use at bedtime. Over time, these become your brain's new cue for sleep instead of the old pattern of tossing and turning.

What the research says

The evidence for hypnotherapy and sleep is solid. A 2018 review in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found positive results for hypnotherapy across multiple sleep studies. Research from the University of Zurich showed that a single hypnosis session increased slow-wave sleep (the deepest, most restorative stage) by up to 80% in susceptible participants.

Hypnotherapy also works well alongside CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia), which is considered the gold standard behavioral treatment for insomnia. CBT-I works on sleep behaviors and thought patterns, while hypnotherapy works on the subconscious conditioning. Together, they cover both angles.

What to expect in a sleep hypnotherapy session

Your first session will start with questions about your sleep history: when the insomnia started, what makes it worse, what you've tried, and what your typical night looks like. This is important because sleep problems show up differently for everyone. Some people can't fall asleep, others wake up at 3 a.m., and some never feel rested even after a full night.

The hypnosis itself is deeply relaxing, which is a benefit in its own right. Your practitioner will guide you through progressive relaxation and then work with suggestions and visualizations tailored to your specific sleep pattern. Many clients actually fall asleep during sessions, which is fine.

Most practitioners provide a recording for you to use at bedtime. This is often the most immediately helpful part. Listening to the recording gives your brain a consistent signal that it's time to shift into sleep mode.

What hypnotherapy won't do for sleep

Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medical evaluation. If your sleep problems might involve sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, or other medical conditions, see a sleep specialist first. Hypnotherapy works best for insomnia that's driven by psychological factors, stress, anxiety, conditioned arousal, or an overactive mind.

It's also not an instant fix. While some people sleep better after the first session, building a new sleep pattern usually takes a few weeks of consistent practice.

Her attention to detail and depth of development brings her subjects to life. While her hypnosis journey formalized during her time at HMI, her talent for the art of suggestion guided her from her earliest moments. As a child, she found art in everything from how she dressed and played to how she competed as a figure skater. As a student, she honed her studio craft by studying her teachers and opening her heart up to outside influences. As a creative, she made waves by choosing themes to highlight the emotive forces of line, color and more. As a teacher, her journey through theater and vocal performance allowed her to connect with students across the spectrum in fine arts. Before facilitating healing imagery journeys for her clients, she founded a learning center in Portland, Oregon for children and adults that need to move to learn. During her tenure she saw how great an impact the subconscious has on those who struggle to focus. She believes in the power of teamwork, between therapist and client, integrating all aspects of the human condition, and she specializes in helping the subconscious and conscious areas work together through the positive, life-changing benefits of hypnosis and other therapeutic modalities which integrate and improve lives. In her practice, she creates a safe, inviting space to help clients reach their personal goals through reduction of stress and anxiety, boosting self-confidence, pain management, smoking cessation, weight wellness, changing emotional patterns, and so much more, including through her favorite art form of all: Therapeutic Imagery.

Born and raised in South Africa, I built a successful international career as a model and actress, working with major fashion brands and starring in film and television productions. While the entertainment industry took me around the world and offered incredible opportunities, I was always deeply captivated by the human experience—what drives us, what limits us, and how our subconscious beliefs shape the lives we live. This lifelong fascination with human behavior led me to transition from the world of film and fashion into the world of healing and transformation. I immersed myself in the study of the subconscious mind, becoming a Certified Hypnotherapist and Master NLP Practitioner through the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. I now specialize in mindset analysis and the powerful rewiring of limiting beliefs, integrating a deep understanding of neuroscience, hypnotherapy, and quantum principles to guide clients toward real and lasting change. My work is rooted in the belief that we are far more powerful than we remember—and that the key to unlocking that power lies within the subconscious mind. I help clients release emotional blocks, resolve trauma, and reprogram outdated patterns so they can step fully into their authentic selves. Whether working one-on-one, leading group hypnosis experiences, or speaking on stage, my mission is to help others awaken to their true potential and remember who they truly are. From international stages to the deepest corners of the human psyche, my journey has been one of transformation—and now, I’m honored to help others embark on that same journey back to themselves.

Hello there! I’m so glad you found your way here. I’m Theresa, and I began my hypnotherapist training in 2013, by "accident" when I sought the guidance of a hypnotherapist to help me navigate some difficulties I was facing in my life. I had never been to a hypnotherapist before, and wasn’t sure what to expect. Nor did I realize what a pivotal point this would become in my life. Within a short time, I left a 20-year career in the music business to dedicate myself full-time to learning this powerful modality.I’m assuming you may be interested in hypnotherapy because your brain might be running some outdated “programs” that aren’t serving you anymore. Perhaps you’ve tried other forms of treatments and therapies to resolve your issue and you’re seeking hypnosis as a last hope. Or, maybe you want to bring more success to a certain area of your life and maximize your brain power to support your goal. If any of this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place. No matter what you may be dealing with right now, the truth is we are never truly stuck. But it sure feels like it sometimes, huh? Why is it so hard to change even though we REALLY want to? The reality is that our subconscious mind is always operatingexactlythe way it’s been programmed, whether we like it or not. This is good news, because our behaviors are learned and can therefore be unlearned. When we work in harmony with the subconscious mind, we can begin to create lasting change. This is how I can help you.I utilize Hypnotherapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT Tapping), and other neuro-rewiring techniques and healing modalities to help you update your subconscious blueprints so you can relax, and start creating something new. Hypnotherapy has transformed my life in unimaginable ways, and I’m passionate about sharing it with those that are ready for this work. If you think this might be you, I’d love to be your guide along the path. I’m happy to set up a free consultation to answer questions and discuss any concerns. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does hypnotherapy help with sleep?
Hypnotherapy addresses the mental and emotional patterns that keep you awake, things like racing thoughts, conditioned arousal, and anxiety about not sleeping. It works with your subconscious mind to retrain your brain's relationship with sleep so that falling asleep becomes more automatic again.
How many sessions does it take for insomnia?
Most hypnotherapists suggest 3 to 6 sessions for sleep issues. Some people notice improvements after the first session, while others need a few weeks to see consistent changes. If your insomnia has been going on for years, expect to invest more time than if it started recently.
Is hypnotherapy better than sleeping pills?
They work differently. Sleeping pills address the immediate problem of falling asleep but don't fix the underlying cause, and most have side effects with long-term use. Hypnotherapy works on the root patterns that cause insomnia. Many people find they can reduce their reliance on sleep medication after hypnotherapy, but that decision should always involve your doctor.
What research supports hypnotherapy for sleep?
A 2018 review in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that hypnotherapy showed positive results for sleep improvement across multiple studies. Research from the University of Zurich showed that hypnosis increased slow-wave sleep (the deepest, most restorative stage) by up to 80% in some participants.
