A stack of balanced stones resting on a calm rocky shore

You've prepared thoroughly. You know the material, the music, the presentation, the skills. But the moment you step into the spotlight, something hijacks your body. Your heart races, your hands shake, your mind goes blank, and all that preparation seems to vanish. It's one of the most frustrating experiences because you know you can do this. You've done it a hundred times in practice. But something about the actual moment short-circuits everything.

Performance anxiety isn't about a lack of skill or preparation. It's about a nervous system that's learned to treat performance situations as threats. And once that pattern is established, it feeds itself. You worry about the anxiety, which creates more anxiety, which makes the performance worse, which gives you more to worry about next time.

The neuroscience behind performance anxiety

When your brain perceives a threat, it activates the sympathetic nervous system, flooding your body with adrenaline and cortisol. Blood flows away from your brain's higher functions and toward your muscles. Your thinking becomes rigid and survival-focused. Fine motor control decreases.

This is incredibly useful if you're being chased by something dangerous. It's the opposite of useful when you're trying to play piano, give a keynote speech, or perform in any situation that requires creativity, nuance, and complex thinking.

The problem is that your subconscious mind doesn't distinguish between physical danger and social evaluation. If it's learned that "people watching me" equals threat, it triggers the same cascade every time.

How hypnotherapy retrains the performance response

Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious threat assessment that drives performance anxiety. During sessions, your practitioner helps your brain reclassify performance situations from "danger" to "opportunity" or even "enjoyment."

Key techniques include:

  • Desensitizing the trigger. Your practitioner guides you through the performance scenario while in a deeply relaxed state, gradually teaching your nervous system that the situation is safe.
  • Mental rehearsal. Under hypnosis, you vividly practice performing calmly, confidently, and at your best. Research in sports psychology shows that mental rehearsal activates the same neural pathways as physical practice.
  • Anchoring calm states. Your hypnotherapist can help you create a quick-access trigger, like pressing your thumb and finger together, that brings back the calm, focused state from your session. With practice, this becomes a tool you can use moments before performing.
  • Addressing root causes. Sometimes performance anxiety traces back to a specific bad experience, harsh criticism, or a humiliating moment. Hypnotherapy can help defuse the emotional charge of that memory so it stops driving current anxiety.

What a session looks like

Your first appointment will start with a conversation about your performance history: when the anxiety started, what happens in your body and mind, what situations are worst, and what you've tried before. The more specific you can be, the better your practitioner can target the work.

During the hypnosis, you'll be guided into a relaxed, focused state. Your practitioner will likely walk you through your performance scenario, helping you experience it while remaining completely calm. You might work on building a mental "performance state," a specific combination of focus, relaxation, and confidence that you can access on demand.

Sessions typically run 60 to 75 minutes. Most practitioners suggest scheduling sessions in the weeks leading up to important performances, with practice recordings to use between appointments.

Realistic expectations

Hypnotherapy has a strong track record for performance anxiety because it directly addresses the mechanism that causes it. A study published in the Contemporary Hypnosis journal found significant reductions in performance anxiety among musicians after hypnotherapy, and similar results have been documented for public speakers and athletes.

That said, some nervousness before performing is normal and even beneficial. The goal isn't to eliminate all activation, which would make you flat and disengaged. The goal is to shift from debilitating anxiety to productive energy, the kind that sharpens your focus and brings out your best. Most clients find that as the fear decreases, their actual enjoyment of performing comes back.

The most important growth a tree does is the kind nobody sees. The roots facing resistance in the dark. The slow, invisible work that makes everything above ground possible. I’ve spent years learning how to tend to that underground work – in myself, and in the people I’m honored to sit with. I help individuals and teens quiet the mental noise, build confidence, and reconnect with their inner clarity.

I work with organizations on team culture, stress management, and bonding. I am an educator at heart and love speaking about the nervous system, how our minds work, and share practical skills to be used the same day. Athletes thrive from our work together and are able to achieve their goals effortlessly. I have a BA in Philosophy, with Minors in Political Science and Women’s Studies from Sonoma State University; a Secondary Social Studies Teaching Certificate from Western Colorado University; and a Masters in American Studies from Pepperdine University. I began my professional career as a High School Social Studies teacher and educational software business owner. When my two children were born I was lucky to be able to focus on them full time. I am a certified Hypnotherapist and Master Hypnotist, Mental Welfare Coach, and Master EFT Practitioner in Manhattan Beach, California. I have certifications from 4 schools: Hypnosis Motivation Institute, The Priority Institute, Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy, and Hypnotic MasterMinds. My passion drives me to continually upgrade my knowledge in this field. I love helping people heal and deepen their self love.

Briana is a Los Angeles based Hypnotherapist providing a safe space for people to embark on a journey of purposeful transformation to achieve personal improvement goals and live a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.Briana’s passion has always been taking care of and encouraging those around her. However, growing up in Los Angeles, she took advantage of the incredible career opportunities offered to her in the industries of fashion, music, sports, and finally, hospitality. Briana developed a passion for hospitality because she got to take care of people, and she loved it. Yet, perhaps like you, she reached a point where she questioned whether she was living her best life and achieving her full potential. For everyone, 2020 was a year like no other. Briana watched friends and family lose their jobs and sense of security as they learned to navigate their dark times while being isolated at home. As she continued to work throughout the pandemic, she began to long for something more. She had become complacent and was merely going through the motions, she knew her spark had gone out. Her career was no longer fulfilling, despite working for a family and company she loved like her own. Sitting on the sidelines of a worldwide pandemic and seeing so many people struggle with loneliness, depression, anxiety, fear, phobias – Briana wanted to help them all. But with millions of people out of work, felt guilty even considering leaving a job for which she should be grateful to pursue something that she would consider more meaningful. After a long hard look in the mirror, Briana realized that there would never be a “right” time to take a giant leap of faith, throw caution to the wind, and pursue a career path where she could genuinely help people.Over the past decade, as a single mom, Briana has sought out environments and people that supported her aspirations, successes, and personal development, while holding her accountable. For this reason, Briana strives to provide a company culture with an emphasis on inclusivity, where people have a safe space to feel supported, nurtured, and connected to kindness. It is within this space, that individuals can begin the work necessary to ultimately reach their highest potential.Briana’s enthusiasm for Hypnotherapy as an organic and effective healing modality makes her confident in her role as a facilitator for positive change. In fact, it is not just what she does, it is the essence of WHO she is.

My passion for hypnotherapy was sparked by curiosity and ignited through my first-hand experiences of the many benefits.Always in the mindset that self-improvement is vital for the soul to reach its full potential, I find the practice of hypnotherapy to be a vast and endless journey to obtain and share the knowledge for the purpose of being of service and helping clients to reach their goals and full potential.Hypnosis is a door that, when opened, connects us to a higher state of consciousness. While I am the facilitator to inducing the state and guiding a session in the utmost therapeutic direction, utilizing the hypnotic state to connect and engage with higher consciousness is entirely up to the client.I believe in the power of intuition and listening intently to what my clients' intuition is telling us. This perception identifies and tells us exactly what your wants or needs from our sessions together are. Every session is tailored around the principle of following your intuition. We can apply my approach to any issues that are candidates for Hypnotherapy. I recognize it as a “spiritual” practice in the most open, loving, and all-inclusive sense of the word. I also utilize many other modalities within my practice, such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Graphotherapy, and Therapeutic Journaling.Ultimately, my greatest desire is to inspire my clients to awaken their deepest consciousness, to explore and recognize their life’s purpose; using hypnosis as a tool to conquer life’s difficulties, and discover their higher selves and their own inner wisdom.

I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to follow my passion in life. Before diving into Hypnosis, QHHT, and Past Life Regression, I spent over a decade in the tech industry, running several businesses. Despite my success, I felt unfulfilled and sought a deeper connection to my soul’s purpose. I explored the human experience through books and workshops, which ignited my passion for helping others discover their own truths. The turning point came after the birth of my first child, when I experienced profound anxiety about being apart from him. A session with a friend who was a Hypnotherapist helped me find calm and freedom, leading me to the Hypnosis Motivation Institute (HMI) to begin my healing career. After a year of intense, accelerated education—over 700 hours—to receive my Diploma in Hypnotherapy, I graduated with Honors in 2010. It was then that I truly found my calling, and with passion and enthusiasm, I strive to empower others to lead fulfilling lives. My journey into Past Life Regression began while I was still pursuing my Bachelor’s degree. I immersed myself in books and attended seminars on the subject, which inspired me to earn my Level 2 Certification in QHHT—a powerful technique that allows clients to access not only past lives but also their higher selves, fostering emotional and physical healing. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of clients facing diverse challenges, customizing each session to provide them with the tools for lasting transformation through Hypnosis, EFT, NLP, and Guided Imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of performance anxiety can hypnotherapy help with?
Hypnotherapy is used for a wide range of performance situations, including job interviews, musical or theatrical performances, presentations, exams, athletic competitions, and intimate performance anxiety. The underlying mechanism is similar in all cases: your nervous system has learned to treat the performance situation as a threat, and hypnotherapy helps retrain that response.
How does performance anxiety hypnotherapy differ from general anxiety treatment?
Performance anxiety is very situation-specific, so the hypnotherapy is more targeted. Instead of working on overall anxiety reduction, your practitioner focuses on the specific performance situation, the triggers leading up to it, the physical sensations you experience, and the mental script that runs during those moments. The sessions often include mental rehearsal of performing calmly and confidently.
Can hypnotherapy help if I freeze or blank out during performances?
Yes, freezing and blanking out are classic fight-flight-freeze responses. Your brain perceives the performance situation as threatening and shuts down higher thinking as a protective measure. Hypnotherapy works directly with that threat response, helping your subconscious reclassify the situation so your brain stays in its optimal performance state instead of defaulting to survival mode.
How many sessions are typically needed for performance anxiety?
Most people see significant improvement in 3 to 6 sessions. Performance anxiety tends to respond well to hypnotherapy because it's usually tied to specific triggers rather than a generalized condition. Some practitioners offer intensive single-session programs for upcoming events, though a series of sessions generally produces more lasting results.
